The D.Y.Patil Medical College was established in 1989 on a sprawling campus admeasuring 5.5 acres of land. The total bunt up area of the budding is 11172.0 sq. ft. The cost of the building is Rs.180 million.
The hospital is catering to the needs of population of Western part of Maharashtra State, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts of Kokan and Some parts of Karnataka State. In effect the hospital serves a population of more than six million with a highly subsidized rates. Average OPD of tne hospital is around 1000 per day and occupancy is more than 95%.
Kolhapur is popularly known as Dakshin Kashi the residence of mother Goddess Mahalaxmi - Ambabai. The Medical College is situated in Kasaba Bawada area of Kolhapur city. The College and the University office is about 2 km from Kolhapur railway and Bus stations. Local Public Transport and autos are available to reach the University office.
Infrastructure
The building houses laboratories for non-clinical subjects, Classrooms, Seminar Halls, Auditorium, Administrative block, Students amenities center, library etc. The laboratories are equipped with sophisticated equipments. The cost of equipments and furniture is Rs. 52.3 million.

The Medical College always looks for excellent faculty as per MCI norms and it has been able to induct and retain good, devoted and dedicated faculty who interact with the students outside the classrooms, laboratories and hospital to create growing interest in their pursuit of knowledge, environment and social responsibilities.
The present strength of the faculty is 164 which include Professors-24, Associate Professors-29, Lecturere-56 and Assistant Lecturers-55. Senior members of the teaching staff of this University are invited as Paper Setters, Examiners and Moderators at various Universities in India. The entire faculty is encouraged to participate in conferences and seminars at state and national levels by giving financial support. Around 40% faculty regularly publish research papers in highly rated professional research journals. The faculty is provided with internet facility. The college, to promote research activities and create an awareness among the faculty, has an active Staff Research Centre.
The Centre at regular intervals discusses current research problems in health science teaching, methodology and emerging areas of research in clinical practices. The quality of teaching is evident from the excellent University results the College has always produced.
